Eliitin empatiavaje

The members of the new upper class avail themselves of the wellsprings. They marry, raise children, live in communities they find satisfying, work hard, and some of them are religious. But they don’t even acknowledge that they are tapping into the traditional sources of human flourishing, let alone celebrate ordinary Americans who do. ... Instead, their attitude toward ordinary Americans is too often covertly condescending if they are people of color and openly disparaging if they are white.

Paul Collier puhuu samasta asiasta: The newly successful are neither capitalists nor ordinary workers: they are the well educated with new skills. They have forged themselves into a new class, meeting at university and developing a new shared identity in which esteem comes from skill. They have even developed a distinctive morality, elevating characteristics such as minority ethnicity and sexual orientation into group identities as victims. On the basis of their distinctive concern for victim groups, they claim moral superiority over the less-well educated.

Moraalinen ylemmyys on näennäistä - "empatia" kohdistuu vain "erilaisiin": victim status was withheld from the white working class: here is the impeccably WEIRD National Review, commenting on their falling life expectancy: ‘they deserve to die’. Evidently, although all victims are equal, some are more equal than others.

National Review kirjoitti siis näin:

the white people in Trump counties were likely to die younger. The causes of death were “increased rates of disease and ill health, increased drug overdose and abuse, and suicide,” the Post’s Wonkblog website reported.

The truth about these dysfunctional, downscale communities is that they deserve to die. Economically, they are negative assets. Morally, they are indefensible. Forget all your cheap theatrical Bruce Springsteen crap. Forget your sanctimony about struggling Rust Belt factory towns and your conspiracy theories about the wily Orientals stealing our jobs. Forget your goddamned gypsum, and, if he has a problem with that, forget Ed Burke, too. The white American underclass is in thrall to a vicious, selfish culture whose main products are misery and used heroin needles. Donald Trump’s speeches make them feel good. So does OxyContin. What they need isn’t analgesics, literal or political. They need real opportunity, which means that they need real change, which means that they need U-Haul.

Toki valkoisen alaluokan pitää ryhdistäytyä eikä vain valittaa, mutta voisiko ko. lehdessä kirjoittaa vastaavasti mustista, joiden ongelmat ovat USA:ssa samantyyppisiä.
