Ovatko ihmiset karjaa ?

Ruukinmatruunan mukaan 90% ihmisistä on karjaa. Kansan - varsinkin alhaisen koulutustason miesten - on viisasta hyväksyä tämä. Hyvinvointi-yhteiskunnassa sentään sonneja ei lopeteta - kastraation jälken heille annetaan heiniä, vaikka heistä ei olisi mitään hyötyä. Demokratiassa on mahdollista jopa haastaa valtio äänestämällä. Osoittaa ainakin vitutuksensa huutamalla. Joskus harvoin jopa muuttaa jotain.

Ruukinmatruunan mukaan viisas taipuu.

Ruukinmatruunan teoria tuli mieleen lukiessani antropologi Carl Salzmanin loistavaa kirjaa Culture and Conflict in the Middle East:

The relation of the state to the peasants is that of the shepherd to his flock: the state fleeces the peasants, making a living off of them, and protects them from other predators, so that they may be fleeced again.

Lähi-Idän maanviljelijä tietää kuitenkin, että hänen taipujan roolinsa vastapainona Lähi-Idässä asuu toinen ryhmä ihmisiä, joka on valinnut toisen roolin. Tribaali. Tribaalit muistuttavat maanviljelijää läsnäolostaan, kun tribaalit hyökkäävät kylään ja ryöstävät sen. Tribaali voi ääritapauksessa vallata koko valtion ja korvata aiemman pakkovallan toisella.

Lähi-idän maanviljelijän elämä on kyykyssä olijan elämää.

...peasants tend to be socially fragmented. That is, people are tied to only a few others, commonly by dyadic networks rather than united into larger groups. Kinship relations tend to be ego-centered, traced bilaterally, through both mother and father, and are limited in scope. The result is that kinship networks are restricted and large kinship groups are not formed. No basis exists for strong social solidarity among community members and resentments fester.

Tribaali elää yksinkertaisissa oloissa aavikon reunoilla. Elämä on kovaa, kollektiivista mutta demokraattista.

In the Middle East, tribes and tribal segments are patrilineages, groupings of the male and female descendants through the male line of a common male ancestor. ... at the extreme, there are tribes entirely independent, and actively hostile to the state, and even entirely separate from the state-dominated society.

Each tribesman is part of a series of nested patrilineages, the smallest defined by close ancestors, and the larger defined by more-distant ancestors. Each lineage at every level has the responsibility to assist and defend each member. Lineages also collectively hold important economic resources, such as pasture and water. There is thus an institutionalized mutual dependence among all members. As a result, social solidarity and cohesion, asabiyya, is commonly found amongst tribesmen.

Nomadism in Palestine, therefore, should be seen, at least in part, as a method, or strategy, whereby the population protected itself against excessive conditions of insecurity and exploitation, and not mainly as adaptation to ecological factors

Ps.

it is not the details of tribal kinship structure that pervade Arab culture but the underlying principles of "balanced opposition," in which collective responsibility, honor, and feuding shape every action and thought, often calling for quick shifts in loyalty. Unite with your erstwhile enemy in opposition to a more distant foe; treat all members of an enemy group as potential targets; demand honorable behavior from members of your own group; and maintain your own and your group's honor by a clear willingness to sacrifice for the collective good. Warring Sunni and Shiite sects from Beirut to Baghdad follow principles of balanced opposition. They may be at each other's throats, yet they'll unite in opposition to an outside threat, as when Shiite Iran harbors members of Sunni al Qaeda on the run from America. In a sense, Islam's founding triumph was to raise the stakes of balanced opposition by uniting all the Arab tribes in an ultimate feud against infidel outsiders.

Mutta kirjoitukseni ei tietysti käsitellyt pelkkää Lähi-Itää vaan laajemmin miehen elämää.

Se sarkasmi jatkuu sitten näin: "...ja sen takia typerykset dominoivat tätä maailmaa".

Typerykset dominoivat, koska viisaat taipuvat. Jos viisaat eivät taipuisi, he osoittaisivat olevansa aivan samanlaisia typeryksiä itsekin.
